Google Quantum AI has demonstrated a technique called "magic state cultivation" on its Willow quantum processor, achieving a roughly 40-fold reduction in errors compared to uncultivated states, according to a study published in the journal Science.

Magic states are a prerequisite for universal quantum computing, enabling operations that go beyond classical computing. Creating high-quality, error-corrected magic states has long been considered a major resource bottleneck, with some estimates suggesting that up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity could be required to produce them.

The cultivation approach, developed by Google Quantum AI researchers Craig Gidney, Noah Shutty, and Cody Jones, works by injecting a noisy quantum state into a small region of a chip and running coordinated measurements to detect and remove errors. The process produced T-states with a logical fidelity of 99.99%, which the company describes as a record.

Development of the technique required resolving multiple engineering challenges. Research scientist Emma Rosenfeld identified that electrical equipment drift and temperature variation in the lab were interfering with measurement benchmarks. The team responded by adding noise-reduction controls and developing a new benchmarking method that uses the cultivation process itself as a measurement tool.

The team also demonstrated the ability to transfer quantum states between two types of error-correction codes — color codes and surface codes — moving states from a distance-3 color code to a distance-5 surface code. Google described this as a step in showing compatibility between the cultivation technique and its quantum computing architecture.

Google stated that further work is needed to demonstrate magic state cultivation at larger scales before it becomes relevant to practical quantum computing applications.
