Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) announced a leadership restructuring at Google DeepMind, with Demis Hassabis stepping back from day-to-day operational responsibilities to take on a new strategic role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current Chief Technology Officer of Google DeepMind and Chief AI Architect of Google, will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, reporting to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. He has been with DeepMind for 13 years.

Hassabis will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs and advise on models and research, working from Google DeepMind's London offices. In his messages to employees, Pichai noted the Gemini app has reached more than 950 million monthly users, and Gemma models have surpassed 900 million downloads.

Separately, Jeff Dean, a 27-year Google veteran, is departing to co-found an independent public benefit corporation with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, focused on accelerating discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering. Alphabet said it will serve as a founding investor and cloud partner in the new venture and will collaborate on a research framework for machine learning systems.
