Garmin and Meta unveil automotive proof of concept with neural wristband

Garmin Ltd. (NYSE: GRMN) and Meta announced a proof-of-concept automotive system that integrates Meta's Neural Band wearable device with Garmin's Unified Cabin in-vehicle technology platform. The collaboration was unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.

The proof of concept allows vehicle passengers to control select infotainment functions through hand gestures detected by Meta's electromyography wristband. The system recognizes movements from the thumb, index, and middle fingers to operate vehicle displays and functions.

Meta Neural Band uses EMG technology to translate neural signals from wrist muscles into digital commands. The device can detect gestures such as clicks, scrolls, and dial movements, with potential for more complex inputs including finger handwriting recognition.

"Garmin Automotive OEM is excited to team up with Meta to create a groundbreaking proof of concept for in-vehicle entertainment that supports convenience and situational awareness," said Matt Munn, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Garmin Automotive OEM.

Alex Himel, VP of Wearables at Meta, stated that the Neural Band "could be the best way to control any device" and expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Garmin to demonstrate automotive applications.

Garmin's Unified Cabin is a digital cockpit platform that operates from a single control module. New features demonstrated at CES 2026 include digital key functionality, AI virtual assistant capabilities, seat-specific audio and visuals, enhanced personalization, and cabin lighting controls.

The demonstration is available by invitation at Garmin's CES booth through January 9. Garmin Automotive OEM provides infotainment and domain controller solutions to manufacturers including BMW Group, Ford, Honda, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, and Toyota.
