FAA halts flights to Philadelphia and Newark airports

Investing.com -- The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily stopped some incoming flights to Philadelphia, Newark Liberty and Teterboro, New Jersey airports on Monday because of air traffic control communications problems.

The problems stem from certain frequencies at a Philadelphia air traffic control facility that manages air traffic for these airports.

FlightAware reported that more than 600 flights at Newark and Philadelphia, representing over 20% of operations, were delayed at Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control. Newark serves as a major hub for United Airlines, while Philadelphia functions as an American Airlines hub.

The communications issues also caused several flights to divert to other airports. Flightradar24 said flights at Newark were delayed by an average of 112 minutes.

The same facility experienced several major communications outages in May 2025 that affected air traffic operations in and out of Newark airport.

The FAA reported last year that a telecommunications outage disrupted communications and radar displays at Philadelphia TRACON.

Congress approved $12.5 billion last year to modernize the aging air traffic control system and increase controller hiring after decades of complaints about airport congestion, flight delays and multiple technology problems in recent years.
