Citi and Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) have announced an expanded collaboration aimed at connecting traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain-based payment systems for corporate and institutional clients, according to a joint press release.
The partnership introduces two initiatives, launching first in the United States. The first, Coinbase Virtual Accounts, uses Citi's Virtual Account Wallet solution — part of its Banking-as-a-Service offerings — to give Coinbase's payments customers bank-account-like functionality. Incoming fiat funds are automatically converted into stablecoins within the system.
The second initiative enables Citi's institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Spring by Citi, the bank's payment acceptance platform. Coinbase Payments powers the stablecoin acceptance layer, while Citi automatically converts the digital currency into fiat and settles funds as the bank of record. The companies state the solution is designed to allow merchants to serve stablecoin holders without directly holding or managing digital assets.
"Clients building on Coinbase have always needed a fast, compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins, and Citi gives us that at scale," said Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Product at Coinbase.
Shahmir Khaliq, Head of Services at Citi, said the arrangement is intended to "remove significant hurdles for clients who want to engage in the digital economy."
Citi states it processes approximately $6 trillion daily and banks 90% of the top e-commerce companies and 15 of the world's 20 largest fintechs. The bank said the initiatives are part of a broader strategy that includes its 24/7 USD Clearing and Citi Token Services solution for cross-border payments.
Both companies said they plan to announce additional capabilities in the coming months.
