Citadel's Rubner sees stronger setup for US stocks in Q4

Investing.com -- US equities reached all-time highs as Citadel's Scott Rubner outlined a more favorable framework for the fourth quarter, citing improved market conditions following September's reset.

Rubner noted that September reduced several market excesses. Positioning declined, leverage decreased, retail activity cooled, systematic strategies sold, and valuations compressed. He described the starting point for the fourth quarter as materially healthier.

Corporate earnings form the core of the bullish case, according to Rubner. The market is shifting focus from macroeconomic factors to individual company performance. Corporate profits stand at record levels, with earnings estimates continuing to rise. Third-quarter earnings per share expectations were revised higher ahead of the reporting season.

The S&P 500 index composition shows extreme concentration, with the top 10 stocks representing roughly 40% of the index. Rubner pointed out that the index can continue to perform even as the average stock struggles.

Corporate buybacks are expected to provide support in the fourth quarter. Companies authorized a record $1.3 trillion of repurchases through September. Buyback windows begin reopening around mid-October, with activity expected to accelerate into November.

US equity CTA positioning changed by more than three standard deviations during September, moving from heavily long to below neutral. Systematic strategies now have room to rebuild exposure if price trends stabilize.

US ETF inflows reached roughly $1.9 trillion year-to-date, ahead of last year's record pace. The third quarter saw $771 billion of inflows, the largest quarter on record.

Mega-cap technology stocks remain supported by earnings, index concentration, and passive flows. Rubner suggested that if bond yields decline, rate-sensitive areas such as small caps, utilities, homebuilders, biotech, and non-profitable technology could see stronger performance.
