Chunghwa Telecom, Fujitsu, and 1Finity sign APN partnership in Taiwan

Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Fujitsu Limited (TSE: 6702), and 1Finity Inc., a Fujitsu subsidiary, announced a two-year memorandum of understanding to expand All-Photonics Network (APN) deployment and explore quantum technology applications in Taiwan.

The agreement builds on a prior strategic partnership between Chunghwa Telecom and Fujitsu that ran from 2024 to 2026, during which the companies conducted APN verification in Taiwan based on Fujitsu's IOWN concept.

Under the new MOU, the three companies plan to conduct technical verification of APN using Chunghwa Telecom's submarine cable systems and to test distributed data center configurations using APN infrastructure. The partnership will also explore quantum technology applications, including security for network control in distributed data centers.

Hey-Chyi Young, Senior Executive Vice President and CTO of Chunghwa Telecom, said the partnership aims to deliver "smarter, greener and more resilient optical communication infrastructure with deterministic network performance and quantum-safe networking for diverse innovative applications in the AI era."

Vivek Mahajan, CTO of Fujitsu, noted that the addition of 1Finity, established last year, is expected to accelerate efforts to enhance optical networks in Taiwan.

1Finity CEO Masaaki Moribayashi said the company will focus on "construction and expansion of high-capacity, low-latency, and low-power-consumption optical networks connecting distributed data centers."

APN technology enables communication using only optical signals, without converting them to electrical signals, offering higher transmission capacity, lower power consumption, and lower latency compared to conventional methods, according to the companies' statement.
