Canada’s EV deal with China "problematic," says U.S. trade official

Investing.com -- U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer criticized Canada’s decision to allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles at a low tariff rate, calling the move "problematic" in comments made to CNBC on Thursday.

"I think it’s problematic for Canada," Greer said. "There’s a reason why we don’t sell a lot of Chinese cars in the United States. It’s because we have tariffs to protect American auto workers and Americans from those vehicles."

The U.S. trade official noted that Canada was seeking agriculture tariff relief as part of the electric vehicle agreement with China. Greer expressed skepticism about the long-term benefits of the deal for Canada, stating, "I think in the long run, they’re not going to like having made that deal."
