San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, Fontana Water Company, and Cadiz Inc. (NASDAQ: CDZI) announced a partnership to address perchlorate contamination in the Rialto-Colton Groundwater Basin.
Under the agreement, Cadiz will provide water filtration systems to Fontana Water Company through its subsidiary ATEC Water Systems. The systems are designed to treat perchlorate contamination that may occur when San Bernardino Valley begins operating the Cactus Basins Recharge Program.
The treatment partnership is part of a 200,000 acre-foot water supply agreement between Fontana Water Company and Cadiz signed in 2024. The Cactus Basins Recharge Program aims to spread imported State Water Project water at existing Cactus Basins for recharge of the Rialto-Colton groundwater subbasin.
"The Cactus Basins Recharge Program is a critical part of our plan to enhance water supply reliability for San Bernardino Valley," said Heather Dyer, CEO and General Manager for San Bernardino Valley.
Planning to utilize Cactus Basins for groundwater recharge had been delayed due to concerns over potential water contaminant migration to Fontana Water Company's existing wells. The new treatment systems are intended to mitigate this issue.
San Bernardino County faces challenges with long-term water security due to climate risks and variability in State Water Project deliveries. The county is supporting local efforts to develop coordinated water infrastructure investment to maximize water reuse and reduce reliance on imported water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, formed in 1954, provides approximately 25% of the region's water needs through deliveries to retail water agencies serving multiple cities including Fontana, Colton, Rialto, and San Bernardino.
