Brown-Forman confirms merger discussions with Pernod Ricard

Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE: BFA, BFB) confirmed it is engaged in discussions with Pernod Ricard regarding a potential business combination, according to a company statement.
The Louisville, Kentucky-based spirits company said the contemplated partnership would function as a merger of equals if an agreement is reached. Brown-Forman indicated the combination would create a global spirits leader with enhanced scale and a powerful brand portfolio.
The company stated that synergies from the potential combination are expected to be significant, resulting in a balanced geographic footprint anchored by two families. Brown-Forman emphasized that no agreement has been reached regarding transaction terms and provided no assurance that any agreement will be finalized.
Brown-Forman said it regularly explores strategic opportunities and noted recent market rumors prompted the confirmation of discussions. The company stated it does not intend to provide further comments unless an agreement is reached.
Brown-Forman operates as a global spirits company with brands including Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, and Herradura. The company employs approximately 5,000 people worldwide and distributes products in more than 170 countries.
