Investing.com - Bank of America says SpaceX's wireless network plans would benefit T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS), tower companies and spectrum value, following calls with T-Mobile CTO Dr. John Saw and Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) executives. The firm says SpaceX would need to expand its spectrum holdings, invest years in building and permitting, and either use towers for base coverage or partner with an existing operator.
T-Mobile's Dr. John Saw says a SpaceX mobile network built with customer-hosted femtocells would not threaten U.S. wireless operators. He says femtocells cannot replicate a nationwide macro network, seamless mobility, indoor coverage or reliable highway handoffs. Matching T-Mobile's outdoor network could require four million femtocells in New York City and 500 million to 1.5 billion nationwide at an estimated cost of $1,000 per femtocell, according to Crown Castle.
Bank of America says SpaceX's limited cellular spectrum would constrain direct-to-cell capacity, while using the same spectrum for satellite and terrestrial service could create interference and force capacity trade-offs. Satellite backhaul may work for remote or backup applications, while cable partnerships or spectrum-hosting agreements could help but would require infrastructure and willing partners. Satellite connectivity is viewed as complementary rather than a replacement for terrestrial mobile networks.
Crown Castle agrees a femtocell network poses no threat and says tower infrastructure offers space, power, fiber, permitting experience and leasing processes that enable faster deployment than building sites from scratch. Dish expanded to 20,000 sites in four years despite capital constraints and grew to more than 5% of Crown Castle's revenue.
Bank of America says SpaceX has deeper financial resources and could build faster if it commits to an all-in terrestrial network strategy. Matching incumbent coverage, capacity, indoor performance, reliability and mobility would still require sufficient spectrum, macro deployment, investment and years of disciplined execution, with satellite direct to device remaining a complementary layer for rural coverage.
