Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK-A, BRK-B) amended its bylaws on September 30 to separate the roles of chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer, according to a company statement.
The bylaw changes prepare for the previously announced leadership transition where Greg Abel will become president and CEO effective January 1, 2026. Abel will replace Warren Buffett as CEO on that date, while Buffett will continue as chairman of the board.
The board voted unanimously on May 4 to appoint Abel to the CEO position, as reported in a Form 8-K filing dated May 3.
The changes take effect immediately, establishing the framework for the company's governance structure when the leadership transition occurs at the beginning of 2026.
