Anthropic launches cyber defense program for infrastructure and open-source

Anthropic has announced the Anthropic Cyber Mission, a new initiative aimed at supporting cybersecurity defenders through tools, research, and resources. According to a company statement, the effort focuses on two areas: critical infrastructure protection and open-source software security.

As part of the initiative, Anthropic introduced the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program (CIDP), which provides access to its Claude AI models, on-site engineers, and threat research to organizations that protect operational technology such as power grids, water systems, and transportation networks. Founding partners include Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Dragos, Hitachi, Insane Cyber, Nozomi Networks, Palo Alto Networks, PwC, and Rockwell Automation.

Anthropic also launched OSS Scanner, a tool that offers open-source software projects regular security scans using its AI models at no cost.

The company stated that state-sponsored adversaries have established footholds across multiple technology sectors, while defenders of critical infrastructure and open-source software face resource shortages. Operational technology systems, which often cannot be taken offline for patching, may carry unresolved vulnerabilities for years.

The announcement follows Anthropic's Project Glasswing, which the company said uncovered numerous vulnerabilities but did not achieve a sufficient reduction in cyber risk. Anthropic merged Project Glasswing into an expanded Cyber Verification Program earlier in the week, which the company said extends access to its AI models to a broader group of defenders.

Anthropic said several CIDP partners are currently working with Claude to identify and fix vulnerabilities. The company added that it plans to expand the Cyber Mission with additional tools and research over time.
