AmpliTech radio used in first AI-RAN system demo at Northeastern

AmpliTech Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AMPG) announced that Northeastern University used its 64T64R MIMO radio unit in a demonstration of what the university called the world's first open-source Massive MIMO AI-RAN system prototype.

The demonstration, conducted by Northeastern University's Institute for Intelligent Networked Systems Open6G OTIC, combined AmpliTech's O-RAN Category B radio unit with NVIDIA AI Aerial software for layer 1 and layer 2 RAN functions. Northeastern University reported the successful demonstration in a press release dated May 20, 2026.

The AI-RAN system is designed to use artificial intelligence directly within network infrastructure to automatically adapt to changing demand, improve coverage in crowded areas, and reduce congestion. The technology aims to support growing connectivity needs across residential, business, campus, transportation, and smart city applications.

AmpliTech's 64T64R radio is the only radio of its configuration to have been certified by the Open6G OTIC, which is the O-RAN Alliance-qualified testing center at Northeastern University. The company states it is the only American company to have designed and commercialized an O-RAN CAT B 64T64R Massive MIMO radio unit.

The demonstration extends AmpliTech's research partnership with Northeastern University's Open6G OTIC, which has previously produced industry-first milestones including the first end-to-end, multi-vendor, virtualized O-RAN-compliant Massive MIMO network demonstration.

AmpliTech Group designs and manufactures RF and microwave signal processing components and 5G infrastructure systems for defense, satellite communications, quantum computing, and telecommunications markets.
