Ameresco and Republic Services launch Illinois gas-to-energy facility

Ameresco Inc. (NYSE: AMRC) and Republic Services Inc. (NYSE: RSG) announced the operational launch of a renewable natural gas facility at the Upper Rock Island County Landfill in East Moline, Illinois, which began operations in December.

The 5.2 megawatt electric facility processes 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, producing more than 500,000 Dekatherms annually. The facility is designed to avoid more than 27,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year, according to the companies' statement.

The project represents the 16th operational facility developed jointly by Ameresco and Republic Services. Ameresco owns the asset, which converts landfill gas from the Upper Rock Landfill into renewable natural gas that can be used as transportation fuel and for other applications.

"The conversion of organic waste into renewable energy serves as a cornerstone of the circular economy," said Michael Bakas, President of Renewable Fuels at Ameresco. "The Upper Rock project adds another high-quality RNG facility to our portfolio and demonstrates the scalable model we've built organically in partnership with Republic Services."

The facility supports Illinois' renewable energy targets of 40% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2050. Republic Services stated the project contributes to its goal to beneficially reuse 50% more biogas by 2030.

The companies announced another Illinois renewable natural gas facility in July 2025, indicating continued expansion of their partnership in the renewable energy sector.
