There have long been rumors Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) will tackle the television next. Now with comments from the Steve Jobs' biography exclaiming "I finally cracked it," those rumors have all but been confirmed by the company.
Still, the big question is: how will Apple change the television? Besides enhancements in color and vividness, the TV has remained the same for decades...
Enter Siri, Apple's intelligent voice assistant on the new iPhone 4S.
The New York Times Bits blog believes Siri is the missing piece of the puzzle.
Imagine a couch potato not having to fumble through the remote controls to change the channel --- Siri, put on the Yankees game! Or how about recording something --- Siri, record this week’s "Sons of Anarchy"! Siri would also take it a step further by playing music on command or displaying pictures. The whole world will be a shout away.
The Apple TV would also have other great features. According to Jefferies' analyst Peter Misek the "iTV" will be integrated, interoperable with mobile devices, interactive, contain an SSD or HDD, leverage carrier/MSO relationships with content providers, have a voice/Siri/gesture/device user interface, and be a gaming platform.
Misek believes the initial addressable market is approximately 50 million units per year. If Apple sells 5 million iTV in 2013, it could add $6 billion to revenue.
