It's finally coming... Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) highly-anticipated new iPhone is expected to be unveiled at a special event on September 10, 2013, according to reports from AllThingsD.
The new phone, expected to be named the iPhone 5S, comes almost one full year following the launch of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 was announced on September 12, 2012 and went on sale Friday, September 21, with per-orders beginning Friday, September 14.
It has been a rocky road for Apple since the launch of the iPhone 5. The date of the device's launch marked the all-time high of $705.07 in the stock. Shares are now 36% below that level and have been even lower. Not only has the stock price suffered, but the company's smartphone market share has eroded to the likes of Samsung and other android makers, who have bridged the technology gap with Apple and received an added benefit with opting for larger screens.
Still, Apple has managed to quiet the critics to some extent. Last quarter, for example, the company sold 31.2 million iPhones, well ahead of the Wall Street consensus of 26.1 million. This came despite the lack of a product refresh since last September.
Apple's allure continues to be the eco-system. While the new iPhone 5S will likely have the same form factor and screen size, the new devices will be running iOS 7 and may have rumored features like a stronger processor, a better camera, and a fingerprint sensor.
Global Equity Research analyst Trip Chowdhry, for one, is excited about the new iPhone. He believes the new iPhone will be "massively successful," and with the new phone Apple may declare "thermo-nuclear war on android."
Speaking to developers, Chowdhry said the September 10th date is probably right. Apple has been urging developers to port their application on Apple iOS7 by September 22nd. He also said while the new iPhones will be slim, the new iOS7 user interface gives an optical illusion that the devices are thicker.
The analyst said the new iPhone will likely be one of the most successful launches to date. If the company also releases a rumored cheaper iPhone, the benefits will be compounded. Research indicated that users in India, Malaysia, Thailand and even parts of the USA still think that by buying android phones, they are buying a cheaper iPhone. "If Apple launches a cheaper iPhone, Apple will immediately gain market share against android, as in many parts of the world, consumers are not well informed and are buying android phones thinking that they are buying a cheaper iPhone." The ongoing patent battle with Samsung is also going to provide a tail-wind to new Apple iPhone sales, the analyst said, as it will increase the consumer awareness that Android Phones are not cheaper iPhones.
The new movie with Ashton Kutcher, "Jobs", is also expected to be a tail-wind to Apple, the analyst comments. The movie is expected to be released on August 16th and will create some buzz for the company's devices, namely the new iPhone 5S.
