KeyBanc analyst, John Vinh, reiterated his Overweight rating on shares of Xilinx (NASDAQ: XLNX) after attending day two of the Hot Chips conference, which was highlighted by five FPGA presentations including four from Xilinx. Key to the company's presence was details about a new platform that could be meaningful for the company, ACAP.
ACAP is a heterogeneous compute platform with uses a coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA), which provides power and performance efficiency approaching that of an ASIC, but with the programmability and flexibility of an FPGA. Customer feedback on ACAP was positive regarding the potential performance improvement but also noted that it introduces a significantly different programming model. Customers indicate that they are skeptical that existing code written for current generation Xilinx FPGA platforms will be able to be ported and thus likely will require a rewrite. Engineering samples are expected in early 2019, with customers indicating mass production is likely to arrive in 2020.
The analyst stated "Long term, we think ACAP could be a game-changer, but will take time, and it leaves us incrementally more positive regarding Xilinx's positioning in ML/AI, cloud computing, ADAS, and 5G".
