Into Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT) getting hit Friday afternoon, at least one analyst made a smart call earlier Friday.

Jeff Stinson from Cleveland Research said sales looked "significantly softer" over the last three to four weeks and first-quarter comps were "likely trending negative."

No category had been unaffected, Stinson said, and Wal-mart might respond with more aggressive pricing and merchandising. Gross margins could be hit on the shift, only bolstered by lower sales.

Though Stinson didn't mention "high payroll taxes and delays in tax returns" as potential catalysts, the point was made.
