In an interview this weekend with Barron's, Citi analyst Deborah Weinswig said she heard a lot of back-to-school shopping has moved online.
"One thing that is new this year," said the veteran analyst "is that we are hearing a lot more about back-to-school basics. So the school-supply list, etc. is being done online and, in fact, some schools are basically providing links to everything on Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN)."
Weinswig balked at giving a list of companies that will be negatively affected by this new trend. Instead, she gave a list of companies that will be the least affected. They include TJX (NYSE: TJX), Ross (Nasdaq: ROST), and Nordstrom, specifically Nordstrom rack (NYSE: JWN).
"They are the least at risk and in the best shape and really have a significant advantage. They can't be 'showroomed'. So not only are TJ Maxx, Ross Stores and Nordstrom Rack in this amazing position, but they are also the cool places to shop," she said.
Weinswig also likes Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT).
"They have done a great job in their approach to back-to- school. No. 1, they've been very focused on offering competitive prices, and part of that has been communicating with customers."
Weinswig also said Walmart is making sure that the basic kinds of items that the consumer needs to go back to school or back to college are in stock.
"That's something they've done extremely well. And they have really thought about things in a different way than the competition, and it has started to pay off in terms of traffic to the stores and traffic to their Website."
