“The Batman” just ended the slow winter movie season with the highest opening weekend of 2022.
AT&T’s (NYSE: T) Warner Bros-produced blockbuster took North American theaters by storm, earning $128.5 million in ticket sales over a three-day span, making it the highest pandemic era debut for the studio.
Talking about the pandemic era earnings, “The Batman” comes second only to “Spiderman: No Way Home” which earned $260 million during its domestic debut last year. This comes as no surprise since Disney and Sony produced “No Way Home,” which had the second-best debut in the history of cinema.
Nonetheless, Warner Bros will be thrilled with “The Batman” exceeding their $110 million expectation, especially given the fact that the 3-hour long movie was PG-13 rated, and dealing with much darker themes compared to most of the other comic book franchises.
″[The 2022 box office] got its official start this weekend with the spectacular performance of ‘The Batman,’ a dark, brooding masterpiece of a crowd-pleaser,” senior media analyst at Comscore, Paul Dergarabedian said.
”[The movie] proved that audiences enjoy their superhero movies not only when they are lighthearted and fun, but also when they provide a deeper emotional experience.”
The film is expected to benefit even more from repeat viewings in the coming weeks.
