OpenAI plans major updates to attract developers with reduced costs
OpenAI plans to launch significant updates for developers next month, aiming to reduce costs and streamline the development of software applications based on its AI models, according to a Reuters report, which cited sources familiar with the matter.
Key among these updates is the introduction of memory storage to its toolkit, potentially cutting application development costs by nearly 20-fold. OpenAI also plans to roll out vision capabilities for applications to analyze and describe images, expanding potential applications from entertainment to healthcare.
This move is in line with CEO Sam Altman's vision of transforming OpenAI from a mere consumer favorite into a robust developer platform. These updates are expected to be showcased at OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference in San Francisco on November 6, according to the sources.
OpenAI refrained from commenting on the matter.
More recently, the company has encountered obstacles in attracting external firms to build businesses utilizing its technology. Altman's significant strategic goal is to embed OpenAI as an essential tool for other companies building apps. He has expressed his ambition to foster an ecosystem centered on OpenAI’s models, which are now integrated into a plethora of applications, spanning from DoorDash to writing assistant tools like Jasper.
The planned launch of the so-called stateful API will reduce the costs of application development by retaining the conversation history, drastically cutting the amount of usage developers need to pay for. OpenAI's forthcoming updates aim to lure a broader range of developers to utilize OpenAI’s model, facilitating the creation of diverse AI software, including writing tools and customer service chatbots.
