TransCanada (TRP) on Watch as U.S. to Release Keystone XL Draft Analysis

March 1, 2013 3:37 PM EST
TransCanada Corp (NYSE: TRP) is in the spotlight Friday afternoon following reports that the Obama administration with be issuing an environmental assessment of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The draft analysis examined a revised route proposed by TransCanada after President Obama said the original route of the pipeline would pose a threat to an aquifer in Nebraska.

Critics on the pipeline say that the government's assessment will be "inadequate." One National Wildlife Federation rep said the analysis should take into consideration "the full life-cycle carbon pollution impacts of developing, transporting, refining and burning tar-sands oil."

Others believe the pipeline will promote mining in Alberta's oil sands, which may release more carbon dioxide than conventional drilling.

Shares of TransCanada are just about flat Friday into the report.
