Apple (AAPL), Others Get Favorable Ruling in California Credit Card Privacy Suit

February 4, 2013 2:40 PM EST
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and other online retailers received a favorable call in California over requirements for customers to purchase goods by using credit cards.

The California Supreme Court said state privacy protections do not apply to online credit card purchases that are downloaded electronically. Apple and others require users to provide and address and phone number before accepting payment, Reuters noted today.

Privacy protections do apply to retailers with a physical location, saying they could not request a customers zip code at time of purchase.

Apple was one of the defendants in the case, which was brought as a proposed class action.

The ruling was 4-3. The case in the Supreme Court of California is Apple Inc. vs. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County and David Krescent, S199384.

Shares of Apple are down 1.8 percent Monday.
