Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is putting a lot of 'oomph!' into advertising its new Surface tablet line, but many have been wondering: "What's the price, Microsoft? Just say it already!"
According to TechCrunch this morning, the veil may have been inadvertently lifted. And it might not be great news for Microsoft investors.
The 32-gigabyte (GB) Windows RT surface will start at $499. Add a touch cover and you can boost that price by $100. Going all out for a 64-GB plus touch cover Surface will run you $699. Prices were on the Microsoft website earlier, though the display is no longer accessible.
Microsoft is planning to sell about 3 million to 5 million of the tablets in the fourth quarter. What may derail those plans is pricing. Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) red-hot iPad is priced similarly and many expected Microsoft -- which is untried in PC making -- to come in under that price, regardless if its trying to place the Surface as a "premium tablet" or not. Moreover, Apple is expected to release a smaller iPad in October and that could draw away some consumers who were mulling the purchase of either the new Surface or an iPad.
Microsoft will be holding a Windows 8 event next week, with official Surface prices likely to be announced then.
Ahead of the bell, Microsoft shares are just about flat.
