Japan's New Energy Initiative Appears to Favor Solars (FSLR) (STP) (YGE)

We'd like to say Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) is leading the segment higher following second-quarter 2012 results, but that would be crass. The solar sector is finicky.

Today, news about the new solar plan in Japan is adding some positive sentiment. Though it was announced a while ago, the plan was implemented in July. An article from the WSJ Tuesday aimed at highlights how thousands of small projects in Japan have been signed-off, with about 99 percent being solar.

The reason is eased environmental restrictions. Japan will sign-off on a project so long as it doesn't require significant changes in topography, like flattening a hill, notes the WSJ.

Since the tsunami in 2011, Japan has been aiming to move further and further away from nuclear power. In fact, Japan now has zero plants running. About 10 percent of its energy comes from hydropower, with solar, wind, and geothermal at a cumulative 1.4 percent. That's a huge market opportunity.

Though it's only one small segment currently, the news is a boon for photovoltaic module makers. Higher on the session are First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), Hanwha Solarone (Nasdaq: HSOL), Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE), and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK), among others.
