Solar shares are moving higher on the session Monday following positive sentiment on new industry information.
According to Digitimes, Taiwan's Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) said first-quarter installs in Germany, the largest customer for solar panel makers, rose 283 percent to 1.969-GW (gigawatt), as companies rushed some installs on the April 1st expiration of subsidies. PIDA sees total installations for the first-half of 2012 at 3.5- to 4.0-GW in Germany.
In the U.S., solar installations grew 85 percent to 50-MW in the first quarter.
Looking to Japan, the country recently announced a new solar subsidy program which started in July 2012. For residential homes, new feed-in-tariffs (FITs) and an extra equipment subsidy could amount to $382 - $446 per kilowatt, with a ceiling set at 10-kW. Those above 10-kW are eligible for FIT rates with electricity buyback period of up to 20 years.
China is said to have about 1-GW of projects in process.
Moving higher today are names like First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWR), Ascent Solar Technologies (Nasdaq: ASTI), Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE), and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL). First Solar may also be moving higher following the filing of a 10-Q for its most recent quarter late Friday, although analysts are skeptical of the rise.
