Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) stock is looking a little pressured Thursday amid reports it might not gain the massive traction from OEMs with Windows 8 that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is currently enjoying with its Android operating system.
According to Digitimes, Microsoft is doing fine with first-tier device makers like HTC, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Samsung, ZTE, Huawei, and Lenovo in implementation of its Windows Phone 8 operating system. However, Microsoft might have a little trouble with second- and third-tier makers like Haier and Konka, who have been putting out mobile devices for under $100 in an effort to capture more market share. First-tier companies have had to price handsets around $157 or so just to stay competitive.
Windows Phone 8 will also not likely have the marketing resources and localized applications that Android currently enjoys. At least, not at the launch.
But, most firms will still want to diversify product offerings and Windows Phone 8 makes a smart alternative to Android.
Shares of Microsoft are off 0.6 percent.
