Ashes-to-ashes, dust-to-dust, spectrum-to-spectrum...
According to reports from the NY Post Tuesday, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) might need to sell some of its high-speed spectrum in 12 different markets in order to complete a previously announced $3.6 billion acquisition of different spectrum with a Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA)-led group of companies.
Verizon's sale might be a boon for competitor T-Mobile USA, of Deutsche Telekom. The opportunity might bolster competitive opportunities for the carrier against Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T). Those who have been following remember when AT&T was trying to take over T-Mobile, but concessions and FCC questioning squelched that deal late in 2011.
Though none of the companies commented to the Post, one source close with government talks pointed out discussions among federal regulators are still in early stages, though initial intentions have been made clear.
T-Mobile has been gunning for more AWS spectrum, and Verizon is a more prominent owner of AWS-1 spectrum in the New York and Washington markets.
