Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) share are trading higher Monday following bullish reports on the outlook for the remainder of 2012.
According to Digitimes, the combination of Microsoft's Windows 8 platform and Intel chips would outpace those of Win8 and ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) by fourfold, or 32 Wintel devices to eight Windows on ARM (WoA) devices by the end of 2012.
The primary reason cited is there are fewer OEMs using ARM-based technology in their devices. Otherwise, compatibility issues and personnel problems at companies like NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), and QUALCOMM(Nasdaq: QCOM) with respect to lower R&D employment are slowing down the development process.
Conversely, companies like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Lenovo, Acer, Toshiba, and Asustek all have at least one to three Wintel platforms in development.
That means WoA devices wouldn't see comparable production levels until possibly the first quarter of 2013.
Windows 8, expected to launch in the third or fourth quarter of 2012, may give more formidable competition to Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS-based systems. Windows 7 isn't specifically designed to work on tablet PCs, making it tough for Microsoft to compete on the same level as Apple.
Digitimes also mulled the idea of Wintel tablets getting a strong presence in the enterprise sector, though with tablets expected to start at $599 and move higher from there, the price might be an initially tough hurdle for many corporations to overcome.
In afternoon trading, Microsoft shares are up 1.7 percent while shares of Intel are 1.2 percent better.
