Wendy's (NYSE: WEN) is trading slightly higher Monday amid reports it may have jumped a spot higher on a nationally recognized restaurant survey.
According to initial data from industry research firm Technomic, Wendy's moved into second-spot ahead of now-private Burger King as the second-largest U.S. hamburger chain.
For the year, Wendy's reported sales of $8.5 billion eking out a win versus Burger King, which posted $8.4 billion in sales. Segment leader McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) dwarfed the others with $34.2 billion in sales.
The numbers include franchise partners as well.
Technomic notes that Burger King and Wendy's have had their work cut out for them in keeping up with McDonald's, which managed to keep low prices through the recession as well as remodel restaurants and introduce new menu items.
Over the last five-years, Technomic data shows McDonald's has grown sales 26 percent, while Wendy's has seen a 9 percent gain, and Burger King was just about flat.
On the session, Wendy's is up 0.2 percent while McDonald's is 0.1 percent better.
