Dish (DISH) Has Better Chance of Gaining FCC Approval for Satellite Conversion

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) may be able to avoid a similar fate experienced by LightSquared in a move to get federal clearance for its proposed mobile-phone service.

According to Bloomberg Monday, Dish's airwaves are further away from the GPS spectrum than LightSquared. Additionally, Dish has a narrower spectrum band which helps it to avoid interference from other carrier's signals.

Just a few weeks ago, the Federal Communications Commission thwarted LightSquared's plans to covert satellite airwaves for voice and data service. The FCC said LightSquared's proposal would interfere with GPS signals, a decision made after giving partial approval in January 2011 to start conversion work.

For Dish, there's still a bit of a wait time as the FCC enters a rule-making period for regulation allowing airwaves used by satellites to be approved for high-traffic ground-based networks. Some analysts see the process taking six to 12 months.

Shares of Dish are flat Monday morning.
