Microsoft (MSFT) Shares Near New Annual High; Appoints Security CEO to Board

February 21, 2012 11:13 AM EST
Shares of Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) are making a strong move higher Tuesday after starting in negative territory at the open. Shares are now up about 0.5 percent and are honing in on the 52-week high at $31.55 set last Thursday.

While there is no news for Microsoft Tuesday morning, the company did appoint Symantec's (Nasdaq: SYMC) CEO John Thompson to its Board on Monday. Ironically, the appointment comes following the much-publicized news Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) still tracks the browsing habits of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) Safari users. Apple's Safari appears on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineups.

Following the news, one Microsoft GM took to the company's official blog, slamming both Google and Apple -- while touting Internet Explorer (IE) -- in the process.

As many Windows users already know, Symantec is the maker of Norton Antivirus, included as a trial version for new Windows users. Besides virus protection, Norton's home offerings also include anti-spyware programs to eliminate tracking, making the appointment of Thompson even more interesting.

Microsoft shares are just about 16-20 cents from hitting a new multi-year high.
