Want a fast iPad while on the go? You shouldn't have to wait too much longer...
According to reports Tuesday, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) next-gen iPad is expected to run on Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) 4G LTE networks. The duo are the only two U.S. carriers who sell the iPad; it wasn't clear whether Sprint (NYSE: S) or another carrier might also pick up the device.
Verizon is currently in the LTE coverage lead, reaching about 200 million people. AT&T is catching up fast, however, now covering 74 million people.
Chipmakers possibly vying for a spot in the iPad 3 may include names like QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM), Sequans Communications (Nasdaq: SQNS), MediaTek, and several others.
Faster speeds will be a boon for both carriers, which have seen margins crimped following lightning-fast sales of Apple's iPhone. Increased demand for more lucrative services versus devices could make up any subsidies paid for the iPad within a few quarters.
Apple still remains King of the Tablet heap regardless; fourth-quarter numbers showed 15.43 million iPads sold globally, accounting for 59 percent of the total market.
