How the Airlines Ranked in 2011: Alaska (ALK) and Delta (DAL) Top Charts

January 5, 2012 12:38 PM EST
Picking the right airline is often one of the most difficult decisions travelers will face when planning a trip for leisure, business, or both. While many people only look at pricing, there are certainly a number of factors which lead to a good or bad flight experience.

The WSJ reported Thursday an "airline scorecard" for 2011 -- a measure of the seven major US carriers based on seven customer metrics.

Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK) had the highest rating, followed by Delta (NYSE: DAL) in second, well above the company's ninth place ranking in 2010. United Continental (NYSE: UAL) and American Air lines (OTC: AMMRQ) closed off the bottom two positions on the list.

The measures in which the airlines were rated: on-time arrivals, flights with delays over 44 minutes, mishandled baggage, complaints filed with the DoT, bumping passengers, canceled flights, and 2-hour tarmac delays.

If you are a person who cares about being on time, Alaska airlines was rated the best company with 88.6 percent of flights arriving on time last year. 4.2 percent of the company’s flights were delayed over 44 minute and only 0.7 percent of its flights were completely canceled. Delta had 83.6 percent of its flights arriving on time and 1.4 percent being canceled over 2011.

For a person who travels with more baggage than just a carryon, JetBlue (Nasdaq: JBLU) may be the top choice. JetBlue only mishandled 2,250 bags over the course of 2011, well above the 3,670 bags which were reported to be mishandled at American. Not being able to retrieve your luggage is almost as disappointing as showing up to the airport and fining out you cannot board the plane because the company over booked it. United bumped the most out of any other airline during 2011 with roughly 10,310 passengers, while JetBlue was only forced to bump around 100.

For people looking for the perfect flight, Southwest (NYSE: LUV) may be the airline as the Department of Transportation only received 40,000 complaints on the company during 2011. The DoT received the most complaints on US Airways (NYSE: LCC) and United customers, with 200,000 for US and 210,000 for United customers.
