Seagate (STX), Western Digital (WDC) to Lead Expected HDD Shipment Increase in Q112

December 6, 2011 7:30 AM EST
To combat an expected shortage following Thailand floods which have hampered hard disk drive (HDD) production, suppliers are expected to boost shipments from 110 to 120 million in the fourth-quarter, to about 140 million units in the first-quarter in an effort to eliminate any supply gaps.

Seagate (Nasdaq: STX) and Western Digital (NYSE: WDC), have already issued shipment guidance; Seagate expects to ship 43 million units in the fourth-quarter for revs of $2.8 billion and gross margin of 26 percent, and Western Digital to ship 26 million units for revs of $1.8 billion. Western Digital production resumption in many of its smaller facilities is already better than expected, according to data issued by Digitimes.

Further, Digitimes notes that Japanese hard drive maker Nidec Corp. ( NYSE: NJ) -- which announced consolidation of its two subsidiaries earlier -- has resumed 80 percent of total production capacity.

Seagate and Western Digital are trading flat Tuesday morning
