It appears that cheaper servers are winning the hearts of many, leaving bigger players caught in limbo.

According to new data from Gartner (NYSE: IT), International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) overtook Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) as the top server revenue generator in the third quarter.

From shipments of about $3.717 billion last year, IBM saw a 3.5 percent gain to shipments of $3.847 billion, good enough for 29.7 percent of the global market share.

Hewlett-Packard, on the other hand, saw a 3.5 percent decline to $2.802 billion, taking it's market share from 32.0 percent to 29.3 percent.

Coming in third was Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) at $1.903 billion shipments, and 14.7 percent of the market. Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) was fourth with $763 million.

For shipments, Hewlett-Packard remained atop the heap with shipments declining 3.1 percent to 693,265.

Dell was second at 517,867, up 3.2 percent. IBM was flat at 287,507.

Notably, the "other vendors" category saw marked improvements in both revenue and shipments, increasing 33.6 percent and 23.2 percent, respectively.
