Set Aside Holiday Traditions... It's Time to Shop! (CVS) (WMT) (WAG)

November 21, 2011 11:11 AM EST
Has Thanksgiving lost some of its luster? Traditionally the only day of the year when the masses collectively take a day off, economic strife and heightened competition for sales is causing many major retailers -- and lots of smaller, unlisted establishments -- to not only open on Thanksgiving, but also start Black Friday deals earlier.

These businesses wouldn't be open if there was no demand, meaning many Americans may eschew traditional holiday values in favor of getting the best deal on Monster High apparel, the new Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) offering, or, the most terrifying, Air Swimmers Remote Control Flying Inflatables which allows your young ones to control a flying shark.

Which are some of the more notable retailers that are going to be open on "Turkey Day," much to worker chagrin?
  • Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG), who is looking to compete more wholly with CVS Caremark Corp. (NYSE: CVS) and Rite Aid Corp. (NYSE: RAD);
  • Gap, Inc. (NYSE: GPS), along with it's arms Old Navy and Banana Republic; and
  • Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT), becuase the Internet never sleeps.
Other, more traditional stores which have been open on Thanksgiving for a while:
  • Kohl's Corp. (NYSE: KSS);
  • Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NYSE: WFM);
  • Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR);
  • Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: WINN);
  • Fred's, Inc. (Nasdaq: FRED);
  • Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY); and
  • Express, Inc. (NYSE: EXPR).
