Seagate (STX) to Overtake Western Digital (WDC) in HDD Market Amid Floods in Thailand

October 24, 2011 7:50 AM EDT
Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX) recently adjusted its fourth-quarter hard disk drive (HDD) shipment expectations from 55 million to a range of 40 to 50 million due to massive flooding in Thailand.

Amid the adjustment, Digitimes notes HDD supply chain makers expect Seagate to overtake Western Digital (NYSE: WDC) as leader in the HDD market in the quarter.

Seagate adjusted numbers due to supplier issues from the flooding -- which hasn't affected it's factories -- while Western Digital will stop production at two Thai facilities.

Digitimes also said Western Digital factories will take from 4 to 6 months to resume normal production.

Suppliers suggest Western Digital's Thai facilities account for about 60 percent of its total global output.

On the news, Seagate is trading stronger Monday morning, up over 1 percent.
