JANCO Partners initiates coverage on shares of Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN) with a Buy rating and $50 price target.

The firm believes that the company is well positioned heading into 2012 and will continue to gain market share in the U.S. skiing segment. management recently confirmed that season pass sales are up 9 percent in terms of dollars and 1 percent in terms of units.

Management at MTN has done a great job positioning itself for future growth and looks to continue to return capital back to its shareholders. The company is in an industry that has high entry barriers and owns the top 5 most visited resorts in the country last year.

An analyst at JANCO comments, "The travel industry is currently facing negative investor sentiment due widening fears of an economic downturn. While these concerns are warranted, we believe Vail Resorts has insulated itself by catering to a higher-end consumer that is less susceptible to the effects of an economic downturn."
