Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) announced Friday its new Blockbuster Movie Pass will be offered to customers for an additional $10 per month.
Management at Dish values the offer at $20 per month but said $10 will be suitable. The new Movie Pass offers 34,000 titles to users through TV and computers with 10,000 Blockbuster titles and a total of 130,000 titles. The new Movie Pass will be free for new Dish users for the first month.
Dish’s on demand library already included stations such as FOX, TBS, TNT, Discovery, AMC, CN, DIY, HGTV, FOOD and History. With the addition of Blockbuster’s streaming content, however, the library will be expanded to include Starz, Epix, Sony Movie Channel, and Encore. Dish was able to purchase Blockbuster and all of its content for only $228 million in an action six months ago after the company went bankrupt.
Management at Dish Network wants users to understand that when they rent movies, they are doing it from Blockbuster -- not Dish Network. All of the content will be able to be streamed directly from DishNetwork.com, while Blockbuster.com will still allow user to stream it’s On Demand titles.
The service will be officially launched on October 1st and is expected (by management) to be a major competitor to the likes of Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), Amazon’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) “Prime,” and Wal-Mart’s (NYSE: WMT) “VUDU.”
VUDU is the only service which doesn’t require a monthly or annual service fee, but charges $1 per rental per day. Prime offers a one-month free trial and only costs $79 for the year. Netflix allows customers to pay on a monthly basis and charges $7.99 per month from streaming alone.
Shares of DISH are trading up 3.94 percent to $26.40 at last check.
