Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) could be facing a big-bucks settlement should the company receive an unfavorable ruling in a suit with Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL).
According to reports Friday, Oracle said it believes damages should be owed by Google, claiming the search giant infringed on Java patents. Total damages have been estimated in the neighborhood of $1.4 to $6.1 billion, an awfully wide margin.
U.S. District Judge William Alsup, presiding over the case in San Francisco, said both companies are "asking for the moon" and should be "more responsible."
Alsup questioned Oracle's attorney about the $6 billion figure, noting Oracle paid it's expert $700 per hour for the numbers.
Of course, Google said it should pay no damages.
The case has been ongoing since last year when Oracle sued Google for unauthorized use of Java in its Android mobile OS. Most everyone knows of the explosive growth realized by that system over the last year or so, meaning a potentially large windfall for Oracle.
Reuters notes: "In a separate order on Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna Ryu granted Oracle's request to question Google Chief Executive Larry Page under oath."
