NetApp (NTAP) Makes Run at EMC (EMC) in External Storage Market - IDC

EMC (NYSE: EMC) remained atop IDC's worldwide external storage systems revenue and market share list for the first quarter, though second place competitor NetApp (Nasdaq: NTAP) has made a slight move northward.

Revenue in EMC's first quarter increased 24.7 percent to $1.523 billion, while market share popped 2.5 points to 27.3 percent.

NetApp saw a 37.8 percent jump in revenue, the most in the top five, to $757 million. The move pushed NetApp ahead of IBM (NYSE: IBM). Market share increased 2.4 points to 13.5 percent.

IBM external sales increased from $579 million to $681 million, a 17.6 percent jump. IBM saw a more modest increase in market share: just 0.5 points to 12.2 percent.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) revenue increased 16.1 percent to $588 million. The company's market share held relatively flat, increasing from 10.3 to 10.5 percent.

Finally, Hitachi (NYSE: HIT) saw a 26.8 percent bump in revs to $503 million, while market share increased 1 point to 9 percent.

In the total open-networked disk storage market, EMC continues to lead the pack.

Revs for EMC increased 24.7 percent to $1.523 billion, 20.3 percent of the market. H-P was second: revs increasing 14.2 percent to $1.38 billion and 18.4 percent market share. IBM came in third, with revs of $1.097 billion and market share of $14.6 percent. Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) was fourth at $857 million in revs and 11.4 percent market share. Finally, NetApp rounded out the top five, with $757 million in revs and $10.1 percent market share.
