HTC Expected to Ramp Up Production of Larger 'Puccini' Tablet in Summer - Digitimes (AAPL)

May 26, 2011 10:49 AM EDT
HTC, the Taiwan-based mobile device manufacturer, is set to launch its first tablet, the Puccini.

Puccini, like many of its peers, isn't aiming to take on Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad tablet; it's aiming to take on others that run Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS.

AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO) and Wintek will provide 10.1-inch touch panels used in the device, and Qualcomm's (Nasdaq: QCOM) MSM8660 1.5-GHZ processor will provide the speed. Puccini will run Android 3.0.1.

Citing supply chain sources, Digitimes says HTC is in the final stages of testing the tablet, with volume production slated for June 2011. This means the device could be in your hands just in time for the holiday season of 2011.

Should Motorola (NYSE: MMI), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) be scared? Maybe.

HTC has seen sales rip higher from NT$37.95 million to NT$104.16 million in the first quarter, with post-tax net income nearly tripling from NT$6.38 to NT$18.36 per share, as its Android mobile devices have gained traction in the U.S. HTC is even producing a smartphone capable of capturing three-dimensional video and pictures.

HTC currently produces the 7-inch Flyer tablet which also boasts a 1.5-GHZ processor and Android. With a price north of $700, though, it's unclear whether consumers might pony up more for something others are doing much more cheaply.
