Viacom (VIA) Tops Q1 Views Led by Strong Gains in Filmed Entertainment

Viacom, Inc. (NYSE: VIA) shares are trading stronger Thursday morning following first-quarter results which beat analyst estimates, driven by Media Networks and Filmed Entertainment performance.

Net income in the quarter was $760 million, or $0.63 per share, a 37 percent jump from $554 million reported in the same period last year. EPS on an adjusted basis was $0.72 in the quarter.

Revenue rose 20 percent to $3.267 billion.

Analysts on Wall Street were looking for EPS of $0.61 on sales of $3.0 billion.

Sales within the Media Networks unit were up 11 percent to $2.082 billion, while Filmed Entertainment gained 38 percent to $1.226 billion.

Debt increased 6.1 percent to $7.16 billion.

Viacom B shares are up 4.1 percent to $58.49 Thursday.
