Sony (SNE) Says Apple's (AAPL) iTunes Holding Publishers Ransom, Looks to Pull Content

February 11, 2011 10:57 AM EST
Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) is looking to exit Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iTunes Music Store, as the Japanese company was angered when its e-reader application for the iPad was rejected.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Michal Ephraim said recently that the company wants to leave the Apple umbrella and use its recently launched Music Unlimited store to take on Apple with what he calls a different approach to digital music sales.

"If we do, then does Sony Music need to provide content to iTunes?" Ephraim said. "Currently we do. We have to provide it to iTunes as that's the format right now. Publishers are being held ransom by Apple and they are looking for other delivery systems, and we are waiting to see what the next three to five years will hold."

Earlier this month the tiff between the two titans of technology grew when Apple rejected the e-reader app from Sony, as the iPad maker is tightening control of the content in its App Store.

Sony is likely to fire back by keeping its games from iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone, as the company announced last month that it has agreed to bring content to Google Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android.
