Rumors, chatter, and scuttlebutt are a staple on Wall Street: Here is a rundown of today's talk across trading desks:

  • The Ivy League Football "Mafia" helps student-athletes land six- figure Wall Street jobs, according to an article from Bloomberg today.
  • Brocade Communications (Nasdaq: BRCD) rose over 10% on renewed speculation the company could be the target of a takeover bid. IBM was mentioned as a possible suitor.
  • While most of the the online brokers were down, E*TRADE (Nasdaq: ETFC) was up 2 percent on speculation it could be the target of a takeover.
  • The negative arbitrage spread on takeover target Netezza Corporation (NYSE: NZ) widened today. Shares closed at $28.14, well above the $27 takeover offer.
  • Reports from overseas, Banco Santander (NYSE: STD) is in talks to acquire a 22% stake in M&T Bank Corp. (NYSE: MTB) from Allied Irish Banks (NYSE: AIB).
  • Other unsubstantiated takeover talk surrounded Amylin Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AMLN), Cree (Nasdaq: CREE) and TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO)
