Wall Street Hubbub 7/26: A Genzyme (GENZ) Deal Coming, Is Biogen Idec (BIIB) Next, New BP CEO, Goldman Sachs the Movie

Have you heard that...? These are the words uttered everyday on Wall Street as traders try go get an edge or pass along the latest juicy gossip. Below is a run-down of the top talk on the Street today.


  • Genzyme (Nasdaq: GENZ) surged 15 percent on Friday and is up anther 7 percent today on speculation Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) has approached the company with an informal takeover offer. Others, including GlaxoSmithKline plc (NYSE: GSK), could also be interested in bidding for Genzyme. Analyst see a takeover price in the $70s, with one seeing it going as high as $89/shares.

  • After losing ground on Friday on reports that rumored suitor Sanofi-Aventis was looking at Genzyme instead, shares of Biogen Idec Inc. (Nasdaq: BIIB) are up 5 percent today on the view that with a Genzyme deal, M&A in the sector could heat up and Biogen Idec will be one of the to takeover candidates.

  • BP (NYSE: BP) is expected to announce on Tuesday that it will replace CEO Tony Hayward with American Robert Dudley. Hayward could be offered a role at BP's Russian venture, TNK-BP.

  • Being a CFA is still good work if you can get it. Only 42 percent of applicant passed the CFA Level 1 exam in June, down from 46 percent on the June 2009 exam. 39 percent passed the Level 2 exam, down from 41 percent. A record 139,900 took the exams.

  • Under-fire investment bank Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) is reportedly funding a documentary about itself by filmmaker Ric Burns.

  • Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) is seeing some interest on renewed speculation it could be the target of a takeover bid. Shares are up 1 percent.

  • Talk a RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) private equity takeover deal is still in the works despite recent reports to the contrary. A deal could be announced soon.
