Researcher iSuppli Sees Massive Growth Through 2013 of LED-Backlit LCD-TV Shipments (GLW, NSM, TXN, More)

iSuppli released a research report today that shows shipments of LED-backlit LCD-TV's 40 inches and larger will increase to 112.1 million units by 2013. This represents a growth rate of 405% from shipments of 34,000 units in 2008.

For 2010, the firm sees shipments growing by 8x to 18.8 million from 2.5 million units in 2009.

They also see 83.2% of 40+ inch LCD-TV's shipped in 2013 will utilize LED backlights, versus 0.1% in 2008 and 6% in 2009.

Consumers are attracted to LED lit LCD-TV's because of several factors, including thinner depth dimensions, better picture quality, and power savings.

Risks include the cost of LED lit LCD-TV's, component supply chain kinks, thermal issues, and LED lifespan.
