WOW! Two Stock Splits In One Day (GMCR, ABC)

Today, in a flashback to the late-90s, two companies announced forward stock splits: Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR) and AmerisourceBergen (NYSE: ABC).

While a stock split doesn't change anything fundamentally about a company, shareholders can feel rewarded and it is a sign that the company is doing well. Also, companies argue that a stock split improves liquidity.

Both of these companies have done well in a difficult environment. Shares of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters are up 104% YTD, propelled by solid earnings and a deal to place its Keurig's gourmet single-cup coffee brewers into Wal-Mart stores across the country. AmerisourceBergen has showed solid earnings power, but its stock is up just 1% on they year, in-line with the S&P 500.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is planning a three-for-two stock split and AmerisourceBergen is planning a two-for-one stock split. AmerisourceBergen is also giving shareholders the added benefit of a 20% boost in its dividend.

The new Green Mountain Coffee shares will be distributed on June 8, 2009 to stockholders of record at the close of business on May 29, 2009.

The new AmerisourceBergen shares will be distributed June 15, 2009 to stockholders of record at the close of business on May 29, 2009.
